Patagonia is an area in the southernmost part of South America. It is at the border between Chile and Argentina. It is well-known for its glaciers and fjords as well as the temperate rainforests. The oceans that surround the land include the Atlantic, Pacific and Beagle Channel. The area is largely under the jurisdiction of both nations.

Patagonia, the name of the region, derives its name form a Patagonian tribal tribe. The first European to cross the great Patagonian plain was Rodrigo de Isla, who visited the area in 1535. The Spanish crown had de jure jurisdiction over the region but was not keen on colonizing it. There were numerous indigenous communities that lived in the region before the 1715 boundary treaty. The Tehuelches, and the Mecharnuekenk were two of these communities. Some indigenous groups survived, while others perished. Several coastal settlements were established in the 18th century.

There are two major regions in the province. 90% of the territory is in Argentina Patagonia, also known as Patagonia Del Sur. The remaining 10% is shared by Chile. Both sides have their own climates and ecological zones. The Argentine side has deserts and grasslands, while the Chilean side has more temperate conditions with the Los Lagos region. The Andes Mountains form the boundary between the two regions.

The world's highest mountain, Cerro Chalten also known as Monte Fitz Roy, is found in Patagonia. There are many tourists who visit this area each year. They love it as a destination for skiers, hikers, and nature lovers. The Magallanes glacier and San Francisco volcano are two other notable landmarks. Winter visitors should prepare for heavy snowfall.

Patagonia has a lot of natural beauty. The region has been the subject of many environmental campaigns, starting with a green tourism campaign in 1990s and continuing to this day. It is an indication of this that the region was a pioneer in the Living Wage movement.
